London. UK. World Oceans Day has been celebrating the ocean on June 8th every year since 2002. Today, amongst the many activities, Human Rights at Sea was asked to engage with the World Youth Foundation to start to develop better awareness in the World’s youth about the maritime environment and what human rights at sea refers to and means.
For 2020, World Oceans Day is growing the global movement to call on world leaders to protect 30% of the world’s ocean by 2030 – a campaign called 30×30. By safeguarding a least 30% of the ocean through a network of highly protected areas the global community can help ensure a healthy home for both marine and human life.
In a pre-recorded Webinar, Human Rights at Sea CEO discusses with Alejandro Guzman, on behalf of the World Youth Foundation, the issues being faced by the charity, its work and how the future could be shaped with better awareness and actions.
International Human Rights Law proposed amendments to UN Ocean Treaty – September 2019
Human rights apply at sea as they do on land, but there still remains a gap in the legislative framework concerning the laws of the sea which does not explicitly refer to international human rights law. Human Rights at Sea believes that the draft agreement under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction offers an opportunity to plug that gap.
